Childhood and Growing Up

Meaning of growth:- Growth means increase in size, height and weight. It implies growth of heart brain, muscles and in general. It can generally be easily observed, appraised of measured.

The concept of growth from psychological point of view:-

  1. Intrinsic process(Basic nature)
  2. Intrinsic changes
  3. Extrinsic changes(coming from outside of the body)
  4. Aspect of development
  5. Measurable
  6. Dependent upon multiple factors
  7. Not continuous

Meaning of development:-  Development does not consist Merely of adding inches to ones height or improving one’s ability, development is a complex process of integrating many structures and functions.

The concept of development:-

  1. Winder and comprehensive
  2. Continuous
  3. Changes in body and behavior
  4. Qualitative as well quantitative changes (Quantitative development refers to the changes that children will go through as they gain knowledge and grow larger physically. Qualitative stage changes are in the way that the child thinks and behaves. It is also in how they perceive the world as they grow older).
  5. Improvement in behavior
  6. Integrated process
  7. Organizational process
  8. Product of heredity and environment

Conclusion:-  Thus, development may be explained as the series of overall changes in an individual due to the emergence of modified structures and functions that are the outcome of the interactions and exchanges between the organism and its environment.
